How to Use Fair Value Gaps in Crypto Trading

A fair value gap is not a buy or sell signal. It is evidence that price moved with enough urgency to leave an inefficiently traded area behind. In crypto, this distinction matters. Bitcoin and major altcoins can move aggressively through thin liquidity, especially around session opens, liquidation cascades, and high-impact news. What a Fair Value Gap Actually Measures
A fair value gap, often called an FVG or imbalance, appears in a three-candle sequence. In a bullish displacement, the high of the first candle does not overlap with the low of the third candle. The space between them reflects a range where price spent little time transacting before repricing higher.
A bearish fair value gap is the inverse. The low of the first candle remains above the high of the third candle, leaving an untraded area as price displaces lower.
The term "fair value" can be misleading for newer traders. It does not mean an asset has reached a fundamentally fair price. Within ICT methodology, it refers to an imbalance in delivery. Price often returns to these areas to rebalance part or all of the move before continuing toward its next liquidity objective.
Often is not always. Some gaps fill immediately, some are partially filled, and some remain untouched for weeks. The edge comes from identifying which gap aligns with the current delivery narrative, not from assuming every open FVG must be filled.
How to Use Fair Value Gaps With Market Structure
Start with structure before marking an entry. If the higher-timeframe market is bullish, price is generally creating higher highs and higher lows, and it has taken sell-side liquidity before displacing upward, a bullish FVG can become a high-quality retracement zone. If structure is bearish, the same bullish gap may only support a temporary reaction before lower prices resume.

The highest-quality FVGs typically appear after a clear change in market behavior. Look for a liquidity raid followed by strong displacement that breaks a relevant swing point. A gap created in the middle of a choppy range, with no liquidity event and no structural confirmation, carries far less information.
Define the Dealing Range First
A fair value gap has more value when you know where it sits within the active dealing range. Mark the swing low and swing high that define the current move, then assess whether price is trading in discount or premium.
In a bullish model, a retracement into a bullish FVG located below the 50% equilibrium of the range is generally more attractive than buying a gap near the highs. In a bearish model, a bearish FVG above equilibrium offers a better location for shorts than selling after price has already extended lower.
This is not a rigid rule. Strong trends can continue without reaching a deep discount or premium zone. But location changes the risk profile. Entering at the edge of a range gives the market less room to move against your position before the idea is invalidated.
A Practical Fair Value Gap Entry Model
The execution timeframe should be lower than the timeframe used for directional bias. A swing trader may establish bias from the daily and four-hour charts, identify a setup on the one-hour chart, and execute on the 15-minute or five-minute chart. A day trader may use the four-hour and one-hour charts for bias, then refine execution on the five-minute chart.
Once a valid FVG has formed, do not automatically place a limit order at its boundary. There are three practical approaches, and each carries a trade-off.
An aggressive entry places a limit order at the near edge of the gap, often called the consequent encroachment or 50% level depending on the model. This can provide strong reward-to-risk potential, but it may expose you to a deeper retracement.
A balanced approach waits for price to enter the FVG and then looks for lower-timeframe confirmation, such as a sweep of local liquidity followed by a market structure shift. This reduces the number of trades but improves confirmation.
A conservative entry waits for price to fully rebalance the gap or reach a nearby order block before demanding confirmation. This can produce cleaner invalidation levels, although the market may reverse before filling the entire zone and leave you without an entry.
Your choice should match your tested trading plan. A trader cannot evaluate a model if entry rules change from chart to chart based on fear, excitement, or the size of the previous loss.
Place the Stop Where the Idea Fails
A stop-loss belongs beyond the level that invalidates the underlying premise, not at an arbitrary percentage. For a bullish FVG trade, that may be below the swing low that initiated the displacement or below the liquidity low whose sweep supported the reversal thesis. For a bearish setup, the invalidation is typically above the corresponding swing high.
A tight stop may create an appealing reward-to-risk ratio on paper, but a stop placed inside normal price fluctuation is not disciplined risk management. Crypto volatility is real. Your position size must account for the distance between entry and invalidation.
Set targets using liquidity, not hope. Prior highs, equal highs, untouched liquidity pools, and opposing higher-timeframe FVGs can all serve as logical objectives. If the nearest meaningful liquidity gives you less than your minimum acceptable reward relative to risk, the trade may not be worth taking.
When Fair Value Gaps Fail
Fair value gaps fail because the context that supported them fails, or because traders assign meaning to gaps that never had it. An FVG formed during low-volume consolidation is not equivalent to one produced by decisive displacement after a liquidity sweep.
Be especially careful when price is approaching a major higher-timeframe objective. A bullish lower-timeframe FVG may react beautifully, then fail as price continues toward sell-side liquidity below. Lower-timeframe confirmation cannot override a clear higher-timeframe draw on liquidity.
News-driven volatility also requires caution. During major macroeconomic releases, spreads can widen, candles can print rapidly, and apparent structure shifts can reverse within minutes. The gap is visible, but the execution environment is unstable. For many traders, standing aside is a valid risk decision.
A gap that has already been tapped multiple times also loses clarity. Each revisit can consume resting orders and weaken the reaction potential. Fresh imbalances created by decisive displacement generally deserve more attention than heavily traded zones.
Common Mistakes That Destroy the Setup
The first mistake is marking every three-candle imbalance as tradable. Charts contain many FVGs. Most are simply features of ordinary price movement. Filter for displacement, liquidity, structure, and higher-timeframe location.
The second is trading against the dominant order flow because a gap looks clean. A bearish FVG inside a strong bullish expansion can offer a short-term scalp, but treating it as a major reversal without supporting evidence creates unnecessary risk.
The third is entering without a target. A fair value gap defines where you may execute. It does not define why price should move next or where you should exit. Every position needs an invalidation point, a liquidity-based objective, and a pre-defined plan for managing partial profits if that is part of your system.
The fourth is confusing observation with validation. A trader may remember the gaps that filled and ignore the gaps that failed. Build a journal. Record the higher-timeframe bias, session, liquidity event, gap timeframe, entry method, stop distance, target, and outcome.
